BWP vs BWR Plywood: What's the Difference and Which Should You Buy?

Buying Guide · Gattani Plywood · Updated June 2026

If you've ever stood in a plywood shop decoding "BWR", "BWP" and "MR", you're not alone. These letters decide whether your kitchen shutter survives ten monsoons or swells in two. Here's the plain difference, the 2026 price gap, and where each grade belongs.

The three grades in one minute

GradeFull formIS standardWater resistance
MRMoisture ResistantIS:303Humidity only — not water
BWRBoiling Water ResistantIS:303Resists water; survives occasional wetting
BWP / MarineBoiling Water ProofIS:710Highest — withstands continuous water

The key jump is BWR to BWP. BWR resin resists boiling water; BWP/marine is bonded and tested to the stricter IS:710 standard, so it withstands prolonged soaking and steam.

Rule of thumb: BWR for dry furniture, BWP/marine wherever water is a regular visitor — kitchens, bathrooms, balconies and exteriors.

2026 price difference

GradeApprox / sheet (18mm 8×4)Approx per sq ft
BWR₹1,800 – ₹2,600₹55 – ₹85
BWP / Marine₹2,400 – ₹4,300+₹90 – ₹140+

BWP typically costs ~20–40% more than BWR of the same brand. Premium gurjan-core marine runs higher. Always confirm the current rate and the IS stamp with your dealer.

Where to use each

Use BWR for

Wardrobes, beds, TV units, study tables and most dry-area living and bedroom furniture.

Use BWP / marine for

Kitchen units and shutters, bathroom cabinets, balcony and exterior furniture, and humid coastal homes.

Avoid getting cheated: buy a recognised brand, look for the IS:710 (BWP) or IS:303 (BWR) mark, get the warranty in writing, and check the core for gaps. See Gattani waterproof plywood.

Frequently asked questions

Is BWP the same as marine plywood?

Yes — BWP and marine plywood both refer to plywood tested to IS:710, the highest water-resistance grade. The terms are used interchangeably in India.

Can I use BWR plywood in the kitchen?

BWR works in dry parts, but for base units, shutters and anything near the sink, BWP/marine is the safer choice.

How much costlier is BWP than BWR?

Roughly 20–40% more for the same brand and thickness, due to stricter IS:710 bonding and better cores.
