Ask for "the best plywood" and many dealers will say gurjan. But what is it, and is the premium justified? Here's the straight answer.
What is gurjan plywood?
Gurjan refers to plywood made with a core (and often faces) of gurjan timber — a dense, strong hardwood from South-East Asia. It's prized for tight, gap-free layers, high density and excellent screw-holding.
Gurjan vs other cores
| Core | Strength | Weight | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gurjan / hardwood | Highest | Heavy, dense | Premium |
| Mixed hardwood | Good | Medium | Mid |
| Eucalyptus / poplar | Lower | Light | Budget |
Is it worth it?
For heavy, long-life or load-bearing furniture — and for marine applications where you want the strongest board — gurjan is worth the premium. For light, dry-area furniture, a good mixed-hardwood or eucalyptus-core board can be perfectly adequate at lower cost.
Gattani manufactures durable, certified plywood for every budget and application.
