How to Identify Genuine Plywood and Avoid Fakes

Buying Guide · Gattani Plywood · Updated June 2026

With ~70% of India's plywood market unorganised, the grade stamped on a sheet isn't always what's inside. Use this checklist to tell genuine boards from fakes.

1. Check the IS / ISI mark

Genuine boards carry the BIS/ISI mark with the correct number — IS:710 for marine/BWP, IS:303 for MR/BWR — plus a brand name and batch details. No mark, no trust.

2. Inspect the edges

Look at the core layers: they should be even, tightly packed and free of gaps or overlaps. Hollow patches mean weak spots and poor screw-holding.

3. Weigh it

A genuine hardwood-core board feels dense and heavy for its size. Suspiciously light sheets often hide soft, low-density cores.

4. Do a boiling/water test

For marine claims, a sample boiled or soaked should not delaminate or swell. Reputable dealers won't object to a small test.

5. Check the surface & warranty

The face should be smooth, crack-free and well-sanded. Genuine brands offer a written warranty — get it on the bill.

Buyer's checklist: IS/ISI mark ✓ · gap-free core ✓ · heavy/dense ✓ · no delamination on water test ✓ · branded with written warranty ✓ · buy from an authorised dealer ✓

Frequently asked questions

How can I tell if plywood is genuine?

Check the IS/ISI mark and number, inspect the edges for a gap-free core, feel the weight, do a water test for marine claims, and buy branded with a written warranty.

Does heavier plywood mean better quality?

Usually — a dense, heavy board indicates a solid hardwood core, while very light sheets often hide soft, low-density cores.

Can I water-test plywood before buying?

Yes. For marine/BWP claims, a soaked or boiled sample should not swell or delaminate. Reputable dealers allow it.
