MR, BWR, BWP, marine, commercial, gurjan — plywood terminology is a maze. Here's every common grade in one place, what it means, and where it belongs.
The grades, simply
| Grade | Means | IS | Use |
|---|---|---|---|
| MR (Commercial) | Moisture Resistant | IS:303 | Dry interiors only |
| BWR | Boiling Water Resistant | IS:303 | General furniture, occasional damp |
| BWP / Marine | Boiling Water Proof | IS:710 | Kitchens, baths, exteriors |
MR / commercial
The cheapest grade — fine for dry-room furniture, but it swells if it gets wet. Don't use it in kitchens or bathrooms.
BWR
Uses a waterproof phenolic resin that resists boiling water. A solid all-round choice for most home furniture.
BWP / marine
Tested to the stricter IS:710 standard for continuous-moisture and exterior use. The grade for kitchens, bathrooms and outdoors.
Core terms you'll also hear
Gurjan/hardwood core = strongest; eucalyptus/poplar core = lighter and cheaper. Grade (glue) and core (wood) are two separate things — check both.
Pick the grade by where it lives: MR for dry rooms, BWR for general furniture, BWP/marine for anything wet.

What are the main plywood grades in India?
MR/commercial (IS:303, dry use), BWR (IS:303, general furniture), and BWP/marine (IS:710, wet and exterior use).
What is the difference between grade and core?
Grade refers to the glue's water resistance (MR/BWR/BWP); core refers to the wood inside (gurjan, hardwood, eucalyptus). Check both.
Which grade is waterproof?
BWP/marine (IS:710) is the boiling-water-proof grade for continuous moisture; BWR resists water but is not fully waterproof.
